Terms of Use

Last updated: June 6, 2026

These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your use of Tend, a self-paced course and companion for climate distress offered by the Mental Health and Climate Change Alliance (the “Alliance,” “we,” “us”). By creating an account or using Tend, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use Tend.

Tend is not a medical service or a substitute for professional care. It offers education and self-help tools only. It is not therapy, diagnosis, treatment, or a medical device, and it cannot respond in an emergency. If you are in crisis or may be a danger to yourself or others, contact a local emergency number or crisis line right away.

1. Who may use Tend

You must be at least 16 years old to create an account and use Tend. By using Tend, you confirm that you meet this requirement and that the information you provide when registering is accurate.

2. Your account

You are responsible for keeping your login credentials confidential and for activity that happens under your account. Please use a strong, unique password and notify us promptly if you believe your account has been accessed without your permission. You may close your account at any time by contacting us.

3. What Tend is, and what it is not

Tend provides psychoeducation, reflective exercises, grounding practices, and a self-assessment screener drawn from climate psychology and evidence-based therapeutic approaches. The screener and its scores are for self-reflection and research; they are not a clinical diagnosis. Nothing in Tend creates a therapeutic, medical, or professional relationship between you and the Alliance. Always seek the advice of a qualified professional with any questions about a medical or mental-health condition.

4. Research participation

Tend is offered in part to study whether tools like it help people cope with climate distress. By using Tend, you agree that your information may be used for research and evaluation as described in our Privacy Policy, including analysis in de-identified and aggregated form. You can withdraw from research or request deletion of your data by contacting us.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

6. Intellectual property

The Tend course, text, design, and underlying software are owned by the Alliance or its licensors and are protected by intellectual-property laws. You may use Tend for your own personal, non-commercial wellbeing. The content you write in Tend remains yours; by entering it, you grant us the limited rights needed to store it, show it back to you, and use it for the purposes described in our Privacy Policy.

7. Availability and changes

Tend is provided free of charge. We may change, suspend, or discontinue any part of the service, and we may update the course content, at any time. We may also update these Terms; when we make material changes we will update the date above and, where appropriate, notify you. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated Terms.

8. Disclaimers

Tend is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. We do not warrant that Tend will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that it will produce any particular result for your wellbeing.

9. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Alliance and its volunteers, contributors, and partners will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for any loss arising from your use of, or inability to use, Tend. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.

10. Indemnity

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Alliance from claims arising out of your misuse of Tend or your violation of these Terms or of any law or the rights of a third party.

11. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which the Mental Health and Climate Change Alliance is established, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. (Please confirm the specific jurisdiction before public launch.)
